About nicknettleton.com
nicknettleton.com is my place to share my notes: tidbits of information, random thoughts, mindmaps, points for discussion, snippets of code, and the occasional complete article. It's a bit like a blog, but more like a notebook: random, unstructured, exploratory. I vouch for the accuracy of nothing contained within.
This site powered by a little application called Zine, which is built into the Matchbox platform I have a developed over the last four or five years. .net magazine's new website uses Zine too, while DropSend is also built on Matchbox. In fact, most of my clients use Matchbox in one form or another to power their internet business. That's what it's good at.
About Nick Nettleton
I've been designing and developing websites for about 7 years now, from little brochure sites to enterprise level applications. My first site was Adventures in South America, about my travels in Peru and Bolivia. Today, of course, everything is different and we use proper XHTML, CSS and all that.
Since then I've created several hundred websites, founded two successful agencies, Loft and Plum, written numerous articles, and even written a couple of books - Web Design Expert and How to Design and Build the Coolest Website in Cyberspace. They were great at the time, and received superb reviews, although I really wouldn't recommend buying them now - unless, of course, you want to capture a bygone moment in time.
Making complex ideas simple
Today, I focus on elegant, usable application design, from user interface to API. I believe that great technology is simple, seamless and invisible: it works best when you don't even know that it's there.
I apply this little maxim through the whole layer cake of a web application: a great user interface is so intuitive, it's invisible to the user. A great templating engine is so powerful but simple, my HTMList can do whatever he needs without needing to learn a lot of new ideas. A great application API is so perfectly designed, a developer can implement a feature in just a few lines of code, without sacrificing flexibility, or getting confused by obscure syntaxes.
All these things are about humanising technology by making complex ideas simple. That's what I do best.
